The owner/operator of this site retired in 1999, and spent around five years settling into retirement. He used that time in support of a worthy non-profit organization (NCHICA) sharpening his database and web development skills.

In 2001 his wife was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer, and she died in 2003. He has not recovered from this loss, and likely never will.

The loss of his wife hardened his a-religiousness and made him an atheist, a non-faith he is comfortable with, and open about. In the American South, atheists are somewhat rare, but (in his experience) are granted the same tolerance by most as are, say, Catholics.

He is adheres closely to the "screaming liberal" line, and has to spit and wash his hands when confronted with a supporter of the 43rd president, George the Decider.

He will not be amused by attempts to install superstitious beliefs in him, or to hear (or read on this site) any non-negative comments regarding Bush and his acolytes and enablers. Be forewarned and save your misguided idea for someone who cares, if you want to post your comments here.

Hi Jim,
This is the one page on your web site that made me "fill in the box" because I suspect only you could understand or believe that I am the only other person in the world who unabashedly agrees with all of its content....from, also loving Jean down to being an atheist who experienced living in the south to being a proud 'bleeding-heart liberal'. Must say, though, having lived in the north for more years than the south...it ain't much different up here. I am always put off by the idea shared by the faithful folk that one can't be a moral person unless one suscribes to the god idea. For me, it is a higher calling to be moral because I am a good human being(.) and do not expect a reward for living a moral life after I'm dead. I do it for free.

As for missing Jean...I do to this day. I miss my connection to a person who knew me to the core...a person who shared my most personal thoughts. Someone who loved sharing with me, her inner thoughts and musings big and small. Her picture sits on my vanity and I see it every morning. Jean was closer to me than my own sister and she will never be replaced.

Being a liberal and feeling proud of it has always been part of who I am. It has gotten me in trouble on occasion but I give no apology to anyone for it whether it means being kicked out of a classroom for expressing my anti-war beliefs or being disowned by my parents who were bigoted and narrow minded. I look around today and see a different world than the "whites only" mentality I grew up with and feel awed by changes I thought not possible in my lifetime.

Now that I have ranted a bit...i really sat down at the computer to send you thanks for contacting me around my birthday. Actually it may have been on the exact day too? There were a lot of messages on my answering machine. I was at the time enjoying Bob's gift to me for turning 60...a snorkeling trip to Cozumel, Mexico. I did try calling twice today but your line was busy and I decided to use the computer instead. Thanks Jim for thinking about me. I will call one of these days too because emailing alone doesn't feel as satisfying as hearing someone's voice.

I hope you are well, enjoying your relatively new home and enjoying being the busy person I remember you to be.

With affection,
Saundy

Hello J.A.
Impressive new website!
I don't know if I am yet as atheistic as you, but getting P.D.C. (pretty damn close).
As a Canadian, I suppose I have no right to voice my opinion on American politics. However, I will be absolutely delighted to see "Dubya" fade into oblivion. He doesn't scare me as much as Dick Cheney. That man is positively dangerous.
Take care and keep in touch.
Bish
